Raye: The Independent Force Behind 'My 21st Century Blues'

Raye, born Rachel Agatha Keen, has emerged as a powerful voice in contemporary music. Her 2023 debut album, My 21st Century Blues, showcases her journey from industry struggles to independent success.

Raye: Early Life and Musical Roots

Born on October 24, 1997, in Tooting, London, Raye grew up in a musically inclined family. Her Ghanaian-Swiss mother and English father were both involved in church music, with her father serving as a musical director. This environment nurtured her passion for music from a young age. At 14, she enrolled in the BRIT School but left after two years, feeling confined by its structure. Instead, she focused on honing her songwriting skills, spending weekends in studio sessions.

In 2014, at just 17, Raye released her debut EP, Welcome to the Winter, on SoundCloud. The project caught the attention of Polydor Records, leading to a contract. During her time with Polydor, she co-wrote songs for artists like Beyoncé, Little Mix, and Charli XCX. However, she faced challenges in releasing her own music, with the label allegedly refusing to release her debut album. This led to her departure from Polydor in 2021.

After leaving Polydor, Raye signed with the independent label Human Re Sources. In February 2023, she released her long-awaited debut album, My 21st Century Blues. The album received critical acclaim for its raw and honest exploration of personal and societal issues. Tracks like “Escapism” featuring 070 Shake topped the UK Singles Chart and marked her entry into the US Billboard Hot 100. The album blends genres like R&B, pop, jazz, and soul, reflecting her diverse musical influences.

Raye’s success continued with her live performances. She headlined tours across Europe and North America and performed at major festivals like Glastonbury. In October 2023, she released My 21st Century Symphony (Live at the Royal Albert Hall), a live album featuring orchestral renditions of her songs. Her achievements culminated at the 2024 Brit Awards, where she won six awards, including British Artist of the Year and British Album of the Year, setting a new record for the most awards won in a single ceremony.
