Deryck Whibley and Greig Nori Dispute

Deryck Whibley and Greig Nori Dispute: Sum 41 frontman Deryck Whibley recently accused former manager Greig Nori of sexual abuse and grooming, a claim he addresses in his memoir Walking Disaster. Whibley, who met Nori when he was 16 and Nori was in his mid-thirties, says coming forward wasn’t easy but felt necessary. “I take no pleasure in revealing what happened, but I couldn’t keep it inside anymore,” Whibley explained in a video shared on Instagram.

In response, Nori issued a statement to the Toronto Star, claiming Whibley was the one who “initiated” the relationship. Nori denied starting anything and labeled Whibley’s accusations false. However, Nori did not directly address the claims of grooming or abuse. Whibley reacted to Nori’s response by firmly standing behind the details shared in his book, saying, “I stand by every word.”

In the video, Whibley challenged Nori to take the issue to court if he truly believed the accusations were lies. “If you think I’m lying, let’s settle this under oath, in front of a judge and jury,” Whibley said. He expressed confidence that he was ready to face Nori in court at any time. Nori did not respond to Rolling Stone’s request for further comment.

Reflecting on the Past and Processing Trauma

Whibley’s memoir recounts how the band began working with Nori, who was also the frontman of Treble Charger. He describes an incident at a rave where Nori, then 34, invited 18-year-old Whibley into a bathroom stall, gave him ecstasy, and kissed him. Whibley said the sexual encounters only ended after a mutual friend learned about them. Nori continued to mistreat the band, forcing them to credit him as a co-writer and ignoring their requests. Sum 41 cut ties with him in 2005, and Whibley had no further contact with him.

Whibley admitted to Rolling Stone that he initially intended to stay silent about the abuse but realized he needed to be honest while writing the book. Though he doesn’t label his experiences as “abuse” in the memoir, Whibley said he is still processing what happened. “It didn’t really hit me until I was the same age Nori was back then,” Whibley explained. “I now understand how someone in his position could manipulate a 16-year-old kid.”
